Fagus

Fagus Schuhleisten were established in Alfeld, Germany in 1911 to manufacture wooden lasts for the footwear industry and also manufactured their own last copying lathes.  Today they supply lasts and model making services to major shoe manufacturers especially in Europe and have customers worldwide, including Australia.

Fagus manufacture lasts in plastic, wood and aluminium and the Fagus specialty is the production of precision lasts for direct injection moulding of soles using both PU and rubber (the latter with a temperature resistant plastic last).  This allows the boot, or shoe, to be completed on the same last with much better integrity of the upper and sole. The major Australian direct injection moulders use Fagus lasts.

Older products are still retained with Fagus being one of the few remaining manufacturers of lasts for riding boots.  An order was recently received from Buckingham Palace to supply 500 pairs of individual riding boot blocks and lasts.  These will be made from the traditional Beech wood that Fagus derives their name from.

Fashion consultancy in shoe design is also offered with Fagus creating a Summer and a Winter Collection of men's, women's and children's fashion footwear.

Fagus were participants in the Hannover Expo 2000 and now have a permanent exhibition featuring not only the history and traditions of last making but also the restored early Fagus buildings created for them by the famed Bauhaus Architect Walter Gropius.
